Shane Byrne says despite producing lap record pace around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix track with his Be Wiser Ducati the four-time champion he hasn't found the front-end feel to attack with confidence yet.
Byrne has topped the times with a 1m 25.117s to pull out over half a second on his nearest rival Jason O'Halloran while went within 0.006s of the best-ever Superbike lap around the Kent circuit.
In an ominous warning to his rivals, the MCE British Superbike champion believes once he finds a firm feeling in corner entry at Brands Hatch which he's confident with he will be able to find significant lap time gains.
“I know that I've got a great bike and when it works it works really, really well but at the minute it is not behaving itself,” Byrne said. “We lost quite a bit of time in the second session trying to find feeling from the front tyre to give me the confidence to release the brake and run the thing through the corners.
“From a feeling point of view I feel a long way away but from a lap time point of view I am not going to say we're a second or half a second away because I don't know how much it is going to bring. I've got no real faith to attack yet.
“I put some new tyres in at the end and yes I did 1m 25.1s but not because I was patient or because I rode well but I was a bit angry. It will come and the boys in the team are doing great to find exactly what we needed.”
With Brands Hatch GP hosting the season finale in October, the round is considered vital preparation for the Showdown decider and Byrne has confirmed the emphasis shift to focus on claiming Podium credits and finding the maximum potential from his Ducati Panigale R.
“This is my home round and it needs to get real here,” he said. “With Podium credits and good preparation for the final round of the season. This morning we may have been fast but I feel I can ride a lot faster but we haven't found a sweet spot just yet.”
