READ: Mossey takes surprise Brands Hatch pole

Luke Mossey says after battling through technical issues and surviving a broken throttle cable scare he still didn't expect to land pole position at Brands Hatch.

The Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider had been struggling with engine braking and trouble with dialling in the ZX-10R into the Brands Hatch Grand Prix track layout on Friday practice but after making breakthroughs in FP3 Mossey was optimistic of making the Superpole shootout.

The 23-year-old was the second rider to set his Superpole lap, with the order dictated by the Q2 times, and had to wait in parc ferme for the seven riders after him to rattle through.

After seeing Jason O'Halloran crash out it left just Byrne between the Cambridgshire rider and a third pole position of the campaign and once the Be Wiser Ducati made a couple of mistakes on his flyer - caused in part by a slow puncture - Mossey duly landed pole over a tenth of a second.

Having witnessed Byrne produce the fastest ever lap at Brands Hatch in FP3, Mossey says pole came as a welcomed surprise after his technical troubles.

"I still feel we weren't going to get pole to be fair," Mossey said. "The first two rows I would've been happy with so to be sitting in pole I am over the moon.

"I'm not blowing smoke up Shakey's arse but I thought he was going to come out and storm it. The track felt quite greasy this afternoon compared to FP3. Tomorrow it is going to be two hard races but I am looking forward to it and I feel we have found a step with the Kawasaki now.

"Yesterday I wasn't happy with the bike at all we had a lot of trouble with engine braking and we couldn't get a right setting. We put the same settings from Brands Hatch Indy when we got pole then and it was completely off around the Grand Prix track which was a little bit disappointing. I felt I was on the back foot, especially with a crash in FP2, I didn't know what else we could do."

Mossey's place in Superpole was thrown into jeopardy in Q2 when he suffered a broken throttle cable but he was fortunate to be rolling through the final corner Clearways to make it back to the pits before a timely red flag gave his crew enough time to apply the fix.

"I wasn't even annoyed [with the issue] I just said to myself 'here we go again'," he said. "Luckily we were carrying enough speed coming into Clearways so I put my head down and coasted in.

"Unfortunately for Dan Linfoot he fell off and it caused a red flag so we had enough time to change the throttle cable over so it was a massive job well done by the boys."
