After setting the fastest ever lap around the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, Shane Byrne was denied his shot at 'something special' in Superpole.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider notched up a 1m 24.838s to set a new fastest ever lap at the Kent track in FP3 and after taking a clean sweep of practice sessions, Byrne looked set to shatter the record once again.

However, rolling into his one lap flyer it was later discovered Byrne had picked up a slow puncture which has been blamed for hampering his lap.

Speaking before the discovery of the problem, Byrne was downbeat for missing out on his chance to blitz the times but was content that despite the lap he could still secure second on the grid.

"I saw that Jason [O'Halloran] had gone down and he had been fast in all the sessions so when I came around and saw 1m 25.3s was provisional pole I knew I had done some 1m 25.0s and a couple of 1m 24s so we had a bit in hand," Byrne said.

"But a little bit of me really wanted to push the boat out this afternoon and produce something really special.

"It wasn't a great lap for me and luckily it still put me P2 and with that many mistakes to take second is pretty good. I am a little bit disappointed. If got to many pole position watches now anyway!"

Looking towards the races at his home event, Byrne has singled out pole sitter Luke Mossey and fellow front row starter Tommy Bridewell as his fiercest rivals in terms of consistent race pace.

"We've seen on the timesheet who can be consistently fast and who can only go for one or two laps," he said. "A couple stand out and they are sitting next to me [Mossey and Bridewell]. I think that I need to get a good start ride my own race and see what happens because BSB races don't come easy."
