Shane Byrne has produced a scorching lap time to lay down a marker to his MCE British Superbike rivals at Cadwell Park with a time nearly half a second under the lap record.
The championship leader, who hasn't won around the Lincolnshire circuit since 2003, notched up a blistering lap of 1m 26.291s midway through the afternoon session which initially gave Byrne over a seventh-tenths advantage ahead of the chasing pack.
As the session ticked down Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Luke Mossey slashed the gap to just under four-tenths but the four-time BSB champion will take a useful advantage into the final practice session.
The Buildbase BMW duo have continued to impress with Richard Cooper taking third on the timesheet, with FP1 topper Jason O'Halloran in fourth to split Cooper and his team-mate Lee Jackson.
Leon Haslam claimed sixth overall as he looks to continue his charge to secure a Showdown spot, with the sole Bennetts Suzuki of Tommy Bridewell in seventh. Christian Iddon's late flyer on the Tyco BMW saw him rise up to eighth ahead of JG Speedfit Kawasaki's James Ellison as RAF Reserves BMW's Jake Dixon rounded out the top ten.
That meant Peter Hickman narrowly missed out with 11th ahead of fellow podium winner at Cadwell Park from 12 months ago Billy McConnell.
Showdown contenders Dan Linfoot and Michael Laverty rounded out the top 15 in front of Danny Buchan debuting on the Tsingtao MSS Kawasaki having split from Moto Rapido Ducati after Brands Hatch.
