Oulton Park: BSB Showdown contenders – Who needs what?

As things stand Michael Laverty, Dan Linfoot and James Ellison hold the final three places in the three-round Showdown format – where the top six are all placed on 500 points plus the podium points they've accumulated over the regular season – but a host of riders are looking to break into the title battle.

Here are all the contenders with their current standings going into the deciding triple-header at Oulton Park this weekend.



Michael Laverty (Tyco BMW) Current standing: 4th Points: 147 Podium Points: 14 (2 wins, 1 second, 1 third)

After a storming start to 2016 Laverty has struggled somewhat during the middle chunk of the campaign. Three consecutive podiums topped by a win at Thruxton looked to put the Northern Irish rider back on track but collecting just 12 points over the past two rounds has kept him within touching distance for his top six rivals.

Dan Linfoot (Honda Racing) Current standing: 5th Points: 145 Podium Points: 10 (3 seconds, 1 third)

A consistent podium challenger, Linfoot has narrowly missed out on a maiden BSB win on a couple of occasions. The Honda rider has struggled for sharp-end race pace in recent rounds but a second consecutive Showdown berth looks strong if he can replicate his speed at Oulton Park from May.

James Ellison (JG Speedfit Kawasak) Current standing: 6th Points: 140 Podium Points: 7 (2 seconds, 1 third)

Ellison moved back into the top six at Cadwell Park but only podiums will satisfy the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider at Oulton Park. Having claimed a third and a fourth at Oulton Park earlier this year similar results should see Ellison maintain his Showdown spot by Sunday night.



Richard Cooper (Buildbase BMW) Current standing: 7th Points: 133 Podium Points: 8 (1 win, 1 second)

Cooper looked certain to keep hold of his top six place at Cadwell Park until his collision with Christian Iddon in race two. The second maiden race winner of the year (along with O'Halloran) Cooper produced a flawless tyre strategy in drying conditions for victory at Oulton Park in May. Will need to rediscover that rhythm this weekend.

Luke Mossey (Quattro Plant Kawasaki) Current standings: 8th Points: 133 Podium Points: 3 (3 thirds)

Last year's BSB Riders' Cup winner has no intention of battling for the prize again in 2016 with eyes on a top six shot. A rider who has increased his pace and results as the season has progressed Mossey will be hoping to time his best at the perfect moment.

Peter Hickman (JG Speedfit Kawasaki) Current standings: 9th Points: 128 Podium Points: 5 (1 win)

Victory in race two at the opening round at Silverstone may have proven to be a false dawn having failed to replicate the result since but a useful haul of points at his home round has helped Hickman push his way into Showdown contention.

Christian Iddon (Tyco BMW) Current standings: 10th Points: 120 Podium Points: 8 (2 seconds, 2 thirds)

After a blistering start with two third places and two second places Iddon led the riders' standings after the round two. Since then his best result has been a sixth place at Snetterton. If he rediscovers his form at Oulton Park in May he still has a chance of breaking back into the top six.



Tommy Bridewell (Bennetts Suzuki) Current standings: 11th Points: 109 Podium Points: 1 (1 third)

After a tricky opening couple of rounds Bridewell has steadily improved on the Bennetts Suzuki. Despite needing to overturn a 31-point deficit, with his rivals ahead of him also having to falter, the Showdown looks unlikely but the popular Wiltshire rider won't give up hope until mathematically impossible.

Notable inclusions are also Glenn Irwin (Be Wiser Ducati) and Lee Jackson (Buildbase BMW), but overhauling 52 point and 70 point deficits respectively plus needing rivals ahead not to score means their chances look very slim.
