Having slipped to three points behind Leon Haslam as the Showdown comes into play, Shane Byrne is targeting a return to the top step of the podium to boost his pursuit of a fifth MCE British Superbike title.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider endured a frustrating race weekend last time out at Oulton Park after missing the podium in all three races despite setting the fastest ever Superbike lap in qualifying at the Cheshire track.

Looking to make amends, Byrne heads to Donington Park having broken his victory duck last year with victory in race two.

Before last year's win the four-time champion hadn't tasted victory at the Leicestershire circuit since 2008 when he claimed a dominant double for Airwaves Ducati and returning to action with the Italian manufacturer he is focusing on a similar feat this weekend.

"Now it gets real, it's the Showdown, I want a fifth title and have to give my all to achieve it starting this weekend," Byrne said. "I really looked forward to the last round at Oulton Park to check our progress since we were there in May, I set the fastest ever two-wheeled lap there last weekend but then had three terrible races.

"However, it showed the progress we've made with the Ducati, and at the pre-season test at Donington Park, I was very fast and if we show the same amount of progression as in recent rounds, then we should be really strong."
