Christian Iddon has held on to top spot at the end of Friday free practice at Donington Park as Luke Mossey leads the charge ahead of his maiden MCE British Superbike Showdown battle.

The Tyco BMW rider headed the late charges up the timesheet in the typical dash of fast laps before the chequered flag and maintained top spot from Showdown contender Luke Mossey.

John Hopkins on the ePayMe Yamaha split the other Showdown contenders by taking third overall ahead of Shane Byrne and Jason O'Halloran despite the Honda Racing rider crashing on three separate occasions on Friday.

Tommy Bridewell took sixth on the Bennetts Suzuki ahead of BSB championship leader Leon Haslam with Jakub Smrz making a move up to eighth overall for Smiths BMW. Despite a late fall at Redgate Glenn Irwin managed ninth as the second Tyco BMW of Michael Laverty completed the top ten.

Fellow Showdown contender James Ellison narrowly missed the top ten in 11th ahead of JG Speedfit Kawasaki team-mate Peter Hickman, with Buildbase BMW's Richard Cooper staying ahead of the last top six member Dan Linfoot in 14th.

The session was twice suspended by two separate red flag incidents which somewhat truncated the running after the FP1 washout.

With 30 minutes gone the first red flag was required when Anvil Hire TAG Yamaha's James Rispoli suffered an engine blowout and after a track inspection ensured the surface was safe to race the second red flag was prompted with 15 minutes left in the session.

Jenny Tinmouth suffered her second off of the day with her stricken Honda destroying some advertising boards which spilled debris on the track.

As the pace increased in the final ten minutes FP1 topper Iddon jumped to the top with a 1m 29.053s as O'Halloran suffered his third off of the day with a low-side fall at Goddards.
