Leon Haslam has charged to pole position at Donington Park with the fastest ever MCE British Superbike championship lap in the Superpole format.
With the Superpole format returning in BSB at the Leicestershire track, Shane Byrne set the time to beat for pole for Haslam and the championship leader duly delivered with a phenomenal 1m 28.275s to set the fastest ever lap at the track in the British series.
Byrne bolted clear of the pack as the penultimate runner in the Superpole format by almost four-tenths and despite running wide around the Melbourne hairpin Haslam pulled together his lap to grab a third pole of the season.
Ellison, marking his first entry into a Superpole shootout, grabbed third having edged out Quattro Plant Kawasaki's Luke Mossey earlier in the session.
Tyco BMW's Christian Iddon acted as somewhat of a Showdown spoiler in fifth position carrying his Friday fastest pace into Superpole having nipped ahead of top six contender Honda's Dan Linfoot.
Final Showdown contender Jason O'Halloran suffered a small mistake during his Superpole lap which means he will start from eighth, behind Bennetts Suzuki's Tommy Bridewell, but ahead of the last of the three JG Speedfit Kawasaki riders Peter Hickman.
Despite topping FP3 having set the previous fastest ever BSB lap John Hopkins suffered a frustrating fall during the intermediate session which forces him to start from 17th.
Charlie Nesbitt wraps up Hel Performance British Motostar championship in style
Charlie Nesbitt has wrapped up the Hel Performance British Motostar championship with another emphatic win at Donington Park on his Pirelli-shod e3 motorsport Redline KTM 250.
Having dominated the series all year, 15-year-old Nesbitt took the championship crown with two rounds to spare having clinched 14 wins in 2016 with seven poles and has only missed the podium on two occasions all year.
“It's been an awesome year, I really can't believe it,” Nesbitt said. “To go out with a win is great, I didn't want to just cruise around to be honest. I really have to say the bike and tyres have been amazing all year, big thanks to Pirelli for all their support.”
