Leon Haslam says his pole position lap wasn't perfect despite setting a new MCE British Superbike lap record but is holding on the weather as a key decider for his race strategy.

With the JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider storming to his maiden Superpole victory at Donington Park he is looking to maintain his flawless form having notched up four consecutive wins entering the Showdown.

Despite marvelling at the Superpole lap record, Haslam admitted it could have been faster after a mistake at the Melbourne hairpin but had enough in the pocket to set a 1m 28.275s - enough to put him eighth on the World Superbike qualifying results at the same track from May.

"I may have pushed too much on the lap as I went wide around Melbourne loop but I am really happy with it apart from that one mistake," Haslam said. "The pace is super quick but these cooler conditions are throwing a spanner in the works."

Looking towards the two races the BSB championship leader says he will wait on the weather and temperatures before opting for his tyre choices having found making the softer option last a race distance a challenge in 2016.

Haslam has preferred to stick with the Pirelli P1 harder tyre to ensure he has the grip and tyre life at the end of a race and fully expects similar late race battles at the Leicestershire circuit.

"In qualifying it was the first time we ran the Pirelli P0 this weekend," he said. "The tyre has a big step in grip and we've got to wait and see what the weather does. I'd love to race with the P Zero because it does feel a lot better but the races this year are always won over the final laps so we will need the grip."
