TT Circuit Assen: Byrne explains how difficult day ends on a positive

Despite feeling it was a difficult Friday practice on his Be Wiser Ducati, Shane Byrne holds on to the positives as he aims to maintain his winning momentum.

The four-time BSB rider says his sole goal is targeting all five wins over the remaining two Showdown rounds to clinch the championship crown in style but feels his Be Wiser Ducati Panigale R has plenty to give in terms of speed even though he ended the day second fastest at Assen.

After spits of rain threatened to curtail the fast times from FP2 Byrne battled back and on his penultimate lap set a 1m 36.850s – a time which put him under the BSB lap record – to move up to second just a tenth off of Tyco BMW's Christian Iddon.

“It has been a pretty difficult day I have not been very happy or very comfortable on the bike,” Byrne said. “We've had a few race weekends when we wheel out the bike and feel good straightaway and work from there. This is more like at the beginning of the year where we couldn't get a feeling.

“On a positive note, I am one-tenth off and don't feel comfortable. I think the team has a good plan for tomorrow so if we get some more dry sessions and we can stumble across what we need there will be a lot of time to come both from the bike and myself.

“Things are not a disaster if we needed to race tomorrow we could do. I'd be lying if I said I had to feeling from Donington or Thruxton so we have some work to do but from the timesheet we know we have some in reserve so it is nice to have.”

Assessing the final two rounds of the season Byrne says he only has eyes on taking a clean sweep of wins in the Showdown after recording a dominant double at Donington Park to pull out a useful 27-point lead.

“It is very much a case of going out to try to win to races on Sunday,” Byrne said. “We'll see what the weather does and if it is iffy and damp maybe then we would see where everyone else is at and go from there but if it is dry I want to win both races.

“As soon as you start thinking you can manage it you are not attacking with the same mindset. All this year I've worked really, really hard developing a new bike and I'm not about to sit back and rest on my laurels. One small technical problem, being run off track or a crash – that would be 25 points gone. So ultimately I want to try to win five more races before the end of the season.”
