Luke Mossey has topped the opening free practice session at the final round of the MCE British Superbike championship at Brands Hatch ahead of fellow top six contender James Ellison in chilly conditions.

The Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider notched up a series of quick laps over the final 15 minutes of the session to go top, initially fending off Dan Linfoot, before staying clear of the charging field headed by JG Speedfit Kawasaki's Ellison.

As the faster times rattled through at the end of the session Mossey, who secured pole position when the Brands Hatch GP track hosted round seven earlier this year, headed the running order with a 1m 25.805s as Ellison and John Hopkins jumped up the order late on.

BSB championship leader also enjoyed a rapid start to the round with fourth fastest overall ahead of Linfoot and Christian Iddon who split fellow title contender Leon Haslam in seventh.

The second ePayMe Yamaha of Broc Parkes claimed eighth on the timesheet ahead of Buildbase BMW's Lee Jackson, who suffered an off at Sheene Curve late on, as Bennetts Suzuki's Tommy Bridewell rounded out the top ten.

Richard Cooper's Buildbase BMW caused a briefly red flag stoppage after it expired just before Clearways, which required marshals to check for split oil on track, as his premature end to FP1 saw him drop to P13.
