Leon Haslam says Shane Byrne and a host of other MCE British Superbike title contenders will be battling for wins at the second round of the 2017 season at Brands Hatch Indy as he hopes to maintain his momentum from a dominant double victory at the opener.

As defending BSB champion Byrne was ruled out of the Donington Park season opener after suffering concussion, Haslam stormed to a double victory weekend at his home event to give himself the perfect start to 2017.

Haslam accepts it may count for little unless he carries the momentum throughout the season and is expecting much fiercer competition at the tight, twisty and short Indy configuration of the Brands Hatch circuit.

Haslam has picked out Byrne, both McAMS Yamaha riders James Ellison and Michael Laverty plus ex-World Superbike riders Sylvain Guintoli and Davide Giugliano as potential contenders who could end his early winning run.

"It is important to not get too carried away as it is a long season and my concentration is on myself and trying to keep up this winning momentum, Haslam said. "I am feeling confident. The shorter lap of the Indy circuit means you cannot afford to make any mistakes and you do have to commit to a move.

"I have never had a problem with a hard pass and that adds to the races here because everyone does get involved.

"I won here last year and it was only by making a move at the last meter before the line so you really can't count on anything until the finish.

"I feel that we are going into this round stronger than last year, but we know that Shakey is going to come out fighting and that this has been a good track for riders like Ellison and Laverty in the past. I think that this could also be a strong round for Guintoli and Giugliano but we will find out.
