Sykes fastest at wet Knockhill.

Tom Sykes assumed his place at the top of the timesheets in the final free practice session before qualifying as rain descended on Knockhill.

With the fastest time going to whoever coped with the tricky conditions best, Sykes knocked Shane Byrne off the top of the timesheets after just 15 minutes and gradually lowered his best marker to finish a comfortable four tenths up on Cal Crutchlow.

Although nowhere near as close as it was yesterday, the top four was still made up of the recognisable riders, with Crutchlow being followed by Leon Haslam and Byrne in third and fourth.

Billy McConnell had an eventful session by going an impressive fifth best on the MSS Discovery Kawasaki, although he did cause a red flag period in the final ten minutes after crashing at SEAT and leaving debris on the circuit.

Nonetheless, with Tristan Palmer in sixth on the Tena for Men Honda, some of the more unfamiliar faces were able to shine ahead of qualifying later today.

Leon Camier continued to struggle to keep up with the leading runners in seventh, although James Ellison was a much improved eighth best following a tough opening day yesterday. Elsewhere, Michael Laverty dropped to ninth fastest in the wet conditions, ahead of Michael Rutter who rounded out the top ten positions.

Meanwhile, there was an unfamiliar face pacing the Daily Star Cup with Kenny Gilbertson managing 12th fastest overall on the Astro Racing Kawasaki, ahead of the big favourite for this weekend in the absence of John Laverty, Gary Mason.
