The British Superbike Championship has confirmed the qualifying changes that will see a knockout style formula introduced to replace the current 'free session'.

Proposed by many of the teams to create greater excitement on a Saturday, the format will be introduced for the next round of the BSB season at Cadwell Park having been formally ratified by the Director of the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board.

Organisers have also confirmed that BSB bikes will now run to the same technical specifications to those that race in the FIM World Superbike Championship from 2009 onwards. More details of that will follow in due course.

As for qualifying, the system will be similar that in Formula 1, with the format being declared as follows:

The BSB qualifying practice session will take place on the day before the race from 14.00 to 15.00.
Q1: 14:00 - 14.25 (25 minutes)

All riders eligible to take part - subject to achieving satisfactory times during the Free Practices (within 107.5% of the fastest time in at least one session), dispensation may be given in exceptional circumstances by the Race Director.
At the end of the session a provisional classification will be published on the timing screen. Riders occupying positions 21 and above will be prohibited from taking any further part in qualifying and their machines must go to the parc ferme. Lap times achieved by the twenty remaining riders will be deleted.
Q2: 14.30 - 14.45 (15 minutes)

At the end of the session a provisional classification will be published on the timing screen. Riders occupying positions 11 to 20 will be prohibited from taking any further part in qualifying and their machines must go to the parc ferme. Lap times achieved by the ten remaining riders will be deleted.
Q3: 14.50 - 15.00 (10 minutes)

In the event of Q3 being declared wet and all prior free practices, Q1 and Q2 being held in dry conditions, the start time of Q3 will be delayed by five minutes and the session duration extended from 10 to 15 minutes.

At the end of the session a final classification and the provisional grid will be published based upon the overall order of Q3 - positions 1 to 10, Q2 - positions 11 to 20 and Q3 - positions 21 and above.
A presentation/TV interview will take place at the conclusion of Q3.

Remaining machines to Parc ferme and other technical checks will take place at the conclusion of Q3.

The organisers will endeavour to recover crashed or retired motorcycles in between each session.

The tyre usage restriction is amended to not include the race day warm up session.
