Byrne crash stops race early.

The second Bennetts British Superbike race has been stopped early after a spectacular crash for race leader Shane Byrne at Knockhill.

The championship leader was comfortably ahead around the damp Scottish circuit but slid off at high speed before the first corner before being launched into the tyre barrier.

Although it is not clear whether Byrne has injured himself, the crash was enough to bring out the red flag for the second time of the race as medics attended the Airwaves Ducati rider.

With the race duly called, Leon Haslam, who was running second at the time, assumes his first win of the season with Michael Rutter second and Karl Harris third.

Although taken away on a stretcher, Shane isn't believed to be seriously hurt. He will, however, be taken to hospital as a precaution.

More to follow as we get it

How come Shakey was not declared the winner? I thought that if a crash caused a red flag after two thirds distance, then the result is declared from the previous lap.

Exactly Sam. I thought the results classification was taken from the previous full lap, in which case Shakey was in the lead. As you say, poor Craig Jones was credited with second place last week at Brands, so what's so different here ?
