Cup rider Gary Mason just missed out on causing a surprise after just missing the top ten shootout in qualifying for the latest Bennetts British Superbike round at Cadwell Park.

With three Cup riders making the second qualifying segment, Mason rose to the challenge to battle over a spot inside the top ten but would eventually lose out to Michael Laverty by a mere tenth of a second.

Nonetheless, the Quay Garage rider can be pleased with 11th on the grid after out pacing Billy McConnell in 12th, the Australian the best of the Kawasaki riders as 'Team Green' failed to reach the top ten.

Tristan Palmer was also a surprise absentee from the leading positions in 13th, while Scott Smart, Stuart Easton, James Ellison, Guy Martin, John Laverty, David Johnson and Martin Jessopp made up the remainder of the positions.

Tom Sykes was quickest in Q2, although his Rizla Suzuki team-mate Atsushi Watanabe gets a special mention for breaking into the top ten for only the second time this year.
