New Bennetts British Superbike Cup winner John Laverty was the most surprising casualty from the first segment of qualifying for the latest round at Silverstone.

The Ducati rider never featured inside the necessary top twenty positions, unlike Cup counterparts Gary Mason and Martin Jessopp who reached Q2 relatively comfortably.

He will start 22nd, just one position behind Guy Martin, who was the only championship class rider to miss the cut after falling from his Hydrex Bike Animal Honda ten minutes from the end. Unable to get going again, Martin gradually slipped down the timesheets, but was eventually bumped out by David Johnson's very final lap.

The remaining casualties were of little surprise, with Chris Burns in 23rd, Dan Stewart in 24th, Tom Tunstall in 25th, Leon Morris in 26th, Francis Williamson in 27th and Shannon Etheridge in 28th.

Tom Sykes was the fastest qualifier, ahead of Cal Crutchlow and Leon Haslam.
