Michael Rutter admits he was surprised to score a front row starting position in qualifying for the latest round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Silverstone.

The North West Ducati rider has been comfortably inside the top ten all weekend, but hadn't bothered the leading riders until he reached qualifying.

Comfortably making the top ten shootout, Rutter's first lap was good enough to put him second provisionally, but while many expected him to slip back down the order, only Leon Haslam would go quicker.

Indeed, Rutter himself wasn't expecting to be celebrating a front row starting position and is now hoping it signals a good race performance tomorrow.

"I wasn't really expecting a front row start here tomorrow as this is another circuit we have come to with no data and have just had to work hard on the settings," he told the British Superbike website. I have done a race run, but I feel like it would have been nice to have been in this position when we started practice on Friday.

"We still have a few things to work on in warm up but a front row start is perfect for tomorrow. We will have to see how the race goes but I certainly want two decent results."
