Shane Byrne has reclaimed top spot on the timesheet after Friday's second free practice session at Cadwell Park as he looks to move on from a frustrating Thruxton round last time out.

Having missed out on the podium at the Hampshire circuit, and being forced to retire from race two with tyre issues, Byrne is aiming to bounce back at Cadwell Park and narrowly headed up FP2 by just 0.030s ahead of RAF Reserves Kawasaki Jake Dixon.

Dixon, who is set for a Moto2 debut next weekend at the British MotoGP round at Silverstone, is hoping to maintain his momentum from a double podium at Thruxton in order to jump into the top six Showdown spots having moved up to seventh in the MCE British Superbike riders’ championship last time out.

Race winner from Thruxton Peter Hickman joined the top two less than two-tenths of a second back on single lap pace but is expected to be a big threat at his home circuit on the Smiths Racing BMW as he cranks up a potential title charge.

Christian Iddon also hasn’t given up on a Showdown spot for Tyco BMW and started brightly at the Lincolnshire circuit with fourth place ahead of Josh Brookes on the Anvil Hire Yamaha and James Ellison on the McAMS Yamaha.

With sole JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider Leon Haslam seventh, with team-mate Luke Mossey ruled out by a fractured vertebrae sustained at Thruxton, Michael Laverty (McAMS Yamaha) made an encouraging return to form with John Hopkins (Moto Rapido Ducati) and Jason O’Halloran (Honda Racing) completing the top ten.
