Peter Hickman says he’s delighted to make amends for a couple of near-misses in the MCE British Superbike championship by securing his maiden Showdown appearance this year.

The Smiths Racing BMW rider booked his place in the top six title battle after race two at Silverstone with eighth place to put enough points between him and the chasing pack to grab his first entry into the Showdown having clinched the BSB Riders’ Cup last season.

Despite losing his record of scoring points in every race in 2017 with his fall in the soaking wet race three, Hickman says it’s a massive achievement for Smiths Racing BMW give its size compared to the factory-assisted rivals also in the Showdown.

“It is a fantastic effort for a privately-run team and they put their heart and soul into it as well as their wallets.”
