Lavilla wins Brands race one, Haslam crashes out

26 March 2006

Current British Superbike Champion Greogorio Lavilla has taken the first win of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch whilst his young team-mate, Leon Haslam high sided out of second place and red flagged the race.

The Airwaves Ducatis were sprinting away with the first two places when Haslam lost the rear of his bike on the run into Paddock Hill bend, thankfully he has been declared fit for race two. As the race had run twenty out of thirty laps the result was declared and no restart required.

Second to Lavilla was HM Plant's Karl Harris, and in third place Michael Rutter on the Stobart Honda. Rutter's former HM Plant stable mate Ryuichi Kiyonari finished just off the podium in fourth place, apparently he hasn't felt confident with his front tyre this weekend.

Dean Thomas faded during the race after his superb start, he was concerned about his tyres wearing out early and he dropped back gradually to finish in eighth. The Rizla Suzukis of Shane Byrne and James Haydon finished in sixth and tenth positions respectively. Haydon did some grass tracking early in the race which knocked him back to seventeenth so he had a lot of work to do to achieve a top ten finish.

Tommy Hill crashed out unhurt on lap three at Clarke corner. Steve Plater who crashed during qualifying has ligament damage to his ankle, not his knee as earlier reported, however he is intending to start testing in a week and a half's time for his endurance racing role.
