Having lost the 2009 MCE British Superbike Championship to team-mate Leon Camier in race one at Silverstone, James Ellison took a consolation victory in race two.

Ellison, who lost race one and with it any chance of the BSB crown when he was overtaken by Camier on the penultimate lap, took his fourth win of the season in a restarted second race - which saw Camier forced into a comeback ride after running off track.

The initial race had been red flagged after less than a lap due to a huge oil spill on the approach to the Abbey corner, at the end of the back straight, which brought down multiple mid-pack riders.

The restart, reduced from 20 to 18 laps, saw Stuart Easton once again snatch the race lead from fellow Honda rider Josh Brookes, with Ellison third and Camier - who suffered a near highside on the initial race start, dropping him to sixth - slotting into fourth.

Camier then put a close move on Ellison through the Bridge/Priory sequence of turns, which seemed to anger Ellison and prompt the #7 to send his Airwaves Yamaha inside Camier at the fiddly final chicane.

A fired-up Ellison then snatched second from Brookes into the Abbey turn on lap two, with Camier demoting the Australian a further position at the same place one lap later.

Camier then re-passed Ellison late on lap three, and wasted no time in attacking Easton for the lead. The 23-year-old Englishman tried to outbrake the Hydrex Honda rider into Abbey but, just as he had done in race one, ran wide - and this time took to the grass.

The incident dropped Camier back to ninth position with 14 laps to go, but he kept his hopes of an 18th victory intact by barging his way up to sixth within two laps - while Ellison grabbed the lead from a hard-to-pass Easton through the fast Maggots section.

With half the race remaining Camier was past Easton's team-mate Tommy Hill for fourth and just 2.1sec behind Ellison, which was reduced to 1.5sec as the top four all closed up.

Camier returned to a podium position by demoting Brookes with a daring outside/inside move through Priory and into Luffied - then claimed second from Easton into Priory on lap 15.

While Camier had been battling to pass the Hondas, Ellison had built a 2.7sec lead, enough for him to claim his first on-track victory since Mallory Park on July 19 by 1.2sec at the chequered flag.

Ellison will go into the final round with a 51 point advantage over Easton for second in the championship, after the Scotsman lost third to Brookes following a firm move at the very final chicane.

Two third places at Silverstone also means Brookes has regained fourth in the championship from Ian Lowry.

Hill claimed fifth in both races on the second Hydrex machine, while Julian da Costa was the top Kawasaki rider with sixth in race two, 3.2sec ahead of MSS team-mate Simon Andrews.

Sylvain Guintoli led the Suzuki challenge in eighth, after a seventh in race one, while Relentless Suzuki riders Lowry and Alastair Seeley were ninth and tenth.

Seeley, who beat the top Cup class riders, was running a bike very similar to the new 2010 'Evo' spec - Superbike chassis, Superstock engine and a standard ECU.

Tommy Bridewell took a pair of Cup victories for Team NB Suzuki, despite being one of the oil spill victims in the first start, while 2009 Cup champion Gary Mason failed to finish race two.

Brookes' HM Plant team-mate Glen Richards did not start the second race, while Michael Rutter claimed the final point with 15th on his Bathams Ducati.

The 2009 BSB season will end with the Oulton Park triple header on October 9-11.
