Shane 'Shakey' Byrne has now won more MCE British Superbike races than any other rider in history after the Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki rider completed a double at Thruxton.

Byrne claimed his 44th victory to eclipse the previous record set by Japanese star Ryuichi Kiyonari as he was confirmed as the winner of race two, which was declared a result after 13 laps when PR Kawasaki's Karl Harris and Bathams Honda representative Tommy Bridewell crashed at Club.

Bridewell was later reported to have suffered a laceration to his thigh.

Samsung Honda's Kiyonari endured a miserable weekend as he also crashed out at Club on the opening lap of the race, escaping unhurt.

Defending champ Byrne, who turned down the opportunity to ride for Paul Bird in the MotoGP CRT class in 2013 to bid for a record fourth BSB crown, took the honours by 0.245s from Samsung Honda's Alex Lowes with Milwaukee Yamaha's James Ellison grabbing the final place on the rostrum, 0.656s down on Byrne.

Race one runner-up Josh Brookes was fourth on the Tyco Suzuki, with Michael Rutter bouncing back from injury to finish fifth on the Bathams Honda Fireblade ahead of Northern Ireland's Keith Farmer, who made amends for his earlier spill by taking sixth on the second of Bird's Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki machines.

Byrne seized the initiative on the first lap from team-mate Farmer and Lowes before the safety car was sent onto the circuit following Kiyonari's crash.

He regained his lead and Lowes and Ellison were locked in battle for second place when the safety car was called into action again after Lee Costello went down on the Halsall Racing Kawasaki on lap nine.

Costello was taken to hospital for further observation.

The race was poised for a fight to the finish between Byrne, Lowes and Ellison until the red flags were deployed as a result of the incident involving Harris and Bridewell.

Chris Walker took seventh on the Quattro Kawasaki after a DNF in race one followed by the Buildbase BMW pair of Jon Kirkham and James Westmoreland.

Lloyds British GBmoto Honda rider Peter Hickman rounded out the top ten.

Byrne now leads the championship on 91 points from Lowes (76) with Brookes third (66) ahead of Ellison (51).
