Lavilla leads Airwaves one-two at Mondello.

Airwaves Ducati rider Gregorio Lavilla led his team-mate Leon Haslam over the line to record his first BSB win and the teams first one-two at Mondello Park today for the fifth round of the British Superbike championship.

HM Plant Honda rider Ryiuchi Kiyonari held on to secure third spot on the podium.

Glen Richards on the Hawk Kawasaki had a superb start ahead of Johnny Rea on the Red Bull Honda. Richards held the lead until Kiyonari decided it was his turn to run at the front, he finally passed Richards around the outside on lap six.

However Kiyonari's lead was short lived as Haslam managed to pass both Richards and Kiyonari on one fell swoop.

Sean Emmett who had been lying in twelfth retired on lap six with a problem with his steering damper. Michael Laverty on the Stobart Honda was on fine form and he moved up into third place on lap seven after putting a magnificent move on Glen Richards, he rode around the outside of him at turn 7b and almost touched the grass - a very brave move.

Lavilla was on a charge from eighth place up to third by lap eleven, he then reeled in Kiyo and one lap later passed team-mate Haslam and pulled a few bike lengths on him immediately.

The Rizla Suzuki team had another tough race when James Haydon crashed out on lap fifteen. He was chasing down Gary Mason when he low sided out of the race unhurt. On the same lap Johnny Rea retired with a mechanical problem that the team are currently exploring. A disappointing day for the young Ulster rider after securing his first ever pole position in Superbikes.

It was another successful race for the Stobart Honda team with all three riders once again in the top ten. Michael Laverty was fourth, Mason ninth and McWilliams tenth.
