Lavilla wins incident strewn race one.

Gregorio Lavilla on the Airwaves Ducati took race one win at round two of the Bennetts British Superbike championship following a crash strewn, red flagged race. Second place went to Ryuichi Kiyonari on the HM Plant Honda and third place was taken up by the second Airwaves Ducati of Leon Haslam.

A five rider crash at Redgate on lap one set the scene for what was going to be an action packed race. Tommy Hill on the Virgin Mobile Yamaha was taking an inside line through Redgate when he high sided across the track and into the line of the other riders. Hill was hit by one of the other fallers but has been reported to be ok. Other fallers in the crash included Glen Richards, Johnny Kirkham, Chris Martin and Kieran Clarke.

The safety car came out on track for three laps while the wreckage was cleared, at this point Haslam was first followed by Lavilla and Michael Rutter. Once the safety car pulled in the action kicked off again with Lavilla diving under Haslam at the Melbourne Loop whilst further down the pack Shane Byrne on the Rizla Suzuki made the same move on Michael Laverty.

On lap four Kiyonari who was in fifth got his head down and passed Byren at the Esses and followed that up by taking his former team-mate Rutter at the Melbourn Loop. One lap later he dispensed with Haslam in spectacular tyre smoking fashion, slithering uner him at the Esses. Kiyo's charge was still on as he tried to reel in Lavilla breaking the lap record on two consecutive laps.

Lavilla responded to Kiyo by setting the fastest lap ever seen at Donington Park on lap eleven, his time was 1min 31.243secs. Johnny Rea on the Red Bull Honda was having a battle with James Haydon when spots of rain started to appear, and Lavilla was shown the under observation flag. The weather unfortunately seemed to catch out both the Rizla riders and Haydon high sided out. He appeared winded but was able to get onto his feet, just as he was picking himself up his team-mate, Byrne crashed out at McLeans in spectacular fashion with his blue Rizla Suzuki going on fire.

Lavilla and Kiyo were still battling at the front but conditions were getting worse so Lavilla put his hand up and had the race stopped. Rea and Laverty were also reported as missing on the red flagged lap, however results were taken from the previous lap and all the fallen riders are believed to be ok.
