Shane “Shakey” Byrne took a well earned and long awaited race win for Rizla Suzuki at the eighth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Knockhill in Scotland.
The last time Rizla took a win was with John Reynolds at Oulton Park in 2004, this is just what the team needed to put all the bad luck they have had this season behind them.
Second place on the podium went to Johnny Rea on the Red Bull Honda, it was also a much sought after result and made even more poignant by the fact that Rea had a huge crash here two years ago which n early ended his career. On his slowing down lap he pulled in where he had the big crash and marked an X in the gravel. “It is awesome to get a podium here; Scotland is like my second home being from Ireland,” said Rea, “Thanks to everyone in my team for their help, and it is nice to get one over on the official Honda team!”
The final place on the podium went to Leon Haslam who was over the moon with the result as it puts him just eleven points off the Championship lead. “I struggled in both races to be honest; once I saw Kiyo and Greg go out I relaxed. I've had two podiums today so I'm happy enough,” said Haslam.
Both the Championship leader and one of the biggest contenders to the title didn't finish race two. The first to go out was Ryuichi Kiyonari with a technical problem on his HM Plant Honda; the Japanese rider was devastated as he had to park up his machine mid race.
Gregorio Lavilla crashed out of fourth place, having just been passed by Rea, he appeared to lose the front end on lap twenty six and is believed to be largely ok although he is having a finger injury looked at.
