The Airwaves Ducati pairing of Leon Haslam and current British Superbike Champion Gregorio Lavilla headed the time sheets for the final free practice session for the Bennetts British Superbikes at Brands Hatch in Kent.
The dry and warm conditions lead to tumbling lap times and the top twelve riders were all within a second of each other. Haslam lapped in 46.035secs with his team-mate Lavilla just 0.059secs behind.
The next four places in the top ten went to Hondas in various guises, but fastest Honda on track was that of Michael Rutter on the green and red Stobart machine. Young Jonathan Rea followed in Rutter's tyre prints for fourth place; the young Ulsterman feels he has grown up a lot over the winter and hopefully that will translate into his racing with some consistent results.
The HM Plant Hondas of Ryuichi Kiyonari and Karl Harris took up fifth and sixth places respectively. Dean Thomas was top Kawasaki in eighth place however his team-mate and fellow Aussie Craig Coxhell was languishing in twenty second place.
Steve Plater who missed out on free practice on Friday due to technical concerns with his Dienza Kawaski was in thirty second place and only completed a few laps. Plater has had a bad run of luck with teams and bikes and at the moment it seems to be continuing, however it hasn't stopped him smiling and looking on the bright side. No doubt once the mechanical gremlins are ironed out Plater will be back at the sharp end.
The British Superbikes are now only running with one qualifying session and three free practice sessions. With only one session to settle the grid it should make for an interesting outcome especially if the weather kicks in. The fastest riders in qualifying will score points towards winning an Audi at the end of the season.
