Colin Turkington was left understandably delighted after securing the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship Independents' title on Finals Days at Thruxton.
The Team RAC driver went into the weekend trailing Mike Jordan in the standings but secured the Indy victory in the opening race to move into the points lead while Eurotech with John Guest man was forced to retire.
Another victory in race two put him out of reach of Jordan and while the final race ended in slight disappointment following a spin at the chicane while fighting for the overall lead with Mat Jackson, it was easily offset by the pleasure of lifting the Indy crown.
“I'm delighted,” he told
Crash.net Radio. “It is a great achievement for myself and everyone at Team RAC. This was our goal at the start of the year and it is good to do it with a brand new car. We have had ups and downs during the season but overall it has been a good time.
“We started well at Brands Hatch and the picture probably looked better than it really was. After that, we struggled a little bit and realised that we had some work to do with the car but mid-way through it came alive and we had a good season after that which puts us in a good position for next year.
Turkington will now turn his focus to the final rounds of the World Touring Car Championship in Macau where he will once again run under the Team Aviva banner – although the Northern Irishman admitted he wasn't sure what the future holds beyond then.
“I can't wait for Macau,” he said. “It will be an amazing experience for me and hopefully we can put on a performance like we did at Brands Hatch.
“As for the future, it's up to Dick. I think we are happy doing the BTCC and are getting on well but we had a good experience with the WTCC at Brands and may do it at some point. But for now I think the focus is still very much on the BTCC.”
