Turner: It's a blank canvas – again

On the weekend where he will make his 50th start in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship, Darren Turner has admitted that he doesn't know what the weekend will hold for the SEAT Sport UK team as it continues to learn about its Leon TDi.

Turner, who will also celebrate his 34th birthday during the Rockingham event, was the man to beat during the early part of the corresponding weekend last season after he set the pace during practice and secured pole position, although race day itself didn't go to plan when he was pushed off the grid with an electrical problem ahead of race one.

This time around, Turner arrives at Rockingham on the back of two solid performances in his first meeting under diesel power at Brands Hatch although his weekend ended in disappointment when he was forced off at Druids in the third race.

However, despite the pace shown at Brands Hatch, Turner admitted that the team will be heading to Rockingham with a blank sheet of paper once again with the diesel Leon being a radically different machine to the petrol car it replaces.

"It's very hard to say how we'll get on at Rockingham, and that's going to be the case at every new circuit we go to this year,” he said. “The Leon TDi is so different to the petrol-engined Leon, we'll be starting each first free practice session with pretty much a blank piece of paper in terms of what set-up works the best.

“We've improved the top speed of the car, so the long fast section between the final corner and turn two should be good for us, but the twisty infield section isn't too dissimilar to Brands Hatch.

"Over the course of a lap we should be competitive at Rockingham, but I don't think we'll have an advantage or be at a disadvantage - which is the way it should be for the fans who want to see good, close racing."
