Eurotech: Everyday is Raceday.

As it was Andrew's first year in the BTCC this season and there was the unique situation of having a father and son team, we thought it would be an interesting concept to see how they went through the season and how they grew. We were also interested to see how Andrew got on in his first year and see how the team developed.

Circuit commentator David Addison had had the idea of doing something like this with Mike for a while, and they came to us to ask if we were interested in doing it. We replied and said 'of course we are' and then we had a meeting with Carl Gray from John Guest where we all sat round a table and we told them what we could do and how we would like to do it. He was very keen for it to happen, Everyday is Raceday was born and so far it has worked really well.

We have a very good relationship with Sky, so it was a easy for us to place the show with Sky Sports and it allowed us to get the slots that we wanted for the show. We are getting good viewing figures and it may have been a bit more difficult for us to do something with ITV, as they already have the touring cars and don't necessarily want another touring car show.

Being on Sky also allows us to possibly take the BTCC to a new audience as it is the kind of show where people will watch it and become involved with a team – so it gives them a reason to come along to a meeting. A lot of people won't come to a race meeting because they'll just think 'it's a load of cars going round a track'. However, if they know the person in a car and want to support them, then they have an incentive to come along. I know that one team member's mother watched our show and then started to watch the racing on ITV because she'd got interested in it.

The show is very much warts and all and I think that is the key thing behind it. You have to be able to get complete access to make this kind of programme work and if you are only looking at what is on the surface, you won't be able to get the true team spirit and won't get a true feeling of what is going on. If the team says 'You can talk to us when it's going well, but when it isn't, you can bugger off' then it isn't what a fly-on-the-wall show is all about. It is all about getting in there and feeling the nitty-gritty of it all. You have to share the bad times as well as the good and there have been some serious lows during the year as well as the highs.

While it may only be a half hour show that goes to air, there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into it. The race meetings are good but I need to be conscious about how much we need to film, what information we need, what shots we have to get and what interviews are required to build the programme. Then I have to spend five days in the edit suite looking at all the footage and choosing every shot and if you watch the show, you'll see there are a lot of little two-second shots. There may be ten of those in a row, and I have to pick out every one and decide which to use; and I have upwards of five hours of footage there to work with.

There is usually a feature I want to sort for each episode, such as something to do with the tyres on the cars, so that always had to be done either before or during the race meeting. Beyond that, you can't have a pre-determined idea on what you want to achieve with each show as you don't know what is going to happen. It could be wonderful and all go to plan or it could be awful. Then again, it could start one way and then swing the other like Mike going off in the first race at Oulton and Andy then drawing pole and getting on the podium. You can't plan for things like that; you have to just go with the flow and adjust your tone accordingly.

Each programme throws up its own challenges and I wouldn't say we have had one that has been really bad in trying to put it together. I was away for Croft and that was hard as I didn't know what had gone on and I was sat in the edit suite looking at the footage I had and the results to ensure it all made sense. Each meeting has its unique challenges but Rockingham was a down weekend as things just didn't go to plan, and then you have like Thruxton where Andy was up in second until the closing laps and an electrical problem forced him out. But I've enjoyed every programme, and I think every one I make, I love more than the previous one.

I have certainly learned a few things from doing the show this year – including what a gearbox looks like! It has been really great as while I have been in the racing world for something like eight years now, I have never bothered to learn about the tyres and things like that. From being with the team, I have learned a lot about how it actually works and how important things are. It has been very informative for me and I certainly walk away from each weekend knowing a hell of a lot more about racing.
