There are always of hurdles that can be put in front of you at different times in your career and the reality is that you have to accept what you have. This has been a challenging time for the team and they have been working very hard to get the cars ready for the new season. As a driver, I have to make the most of the situation we are in and our focus is fully on getting the car up to speed as quickly as possible to take the challenge to our rivals.
When you look at the BMW, you look at the team and look at the staff that there are, everything is there that you need to make a race-winning car. You only need to look at the likes of Honda and MG in the past to see that if lady luck is on our side, there is no reason why we can't have a good weekend at Brands Hatch despite the car being so new, and if we can do that, it would set us up well for the rest of the year.
I'm not the only member of the Collard family who races, and both my boys are competing in karting again this year. Jordan is in Mini Max and has a KF3 campaign in the British Championship and Ricky is racing in KF2 in the European and the FIA World Championship, so it is a busy time for us.
The hard bit of it all actually comes in the build-up to a race weekend when we have to work out the logistics to make sure everyone is in the right place at the right time. We've also got to make sure that things like hotels are booked and that chaperones are there for the boys if I'm not there myself because I'm racing.
When it comes those weekends where we are all competing, they are experienced enough and mature enough to go off and race without dad being there!
The fact that three of us race means there is a level of competitiveness in the family, although the boys are competitive enough between themselves without involving me. They just call me the old man who gets in the way at times. They are having fun and living the dream and I'm just glad that we all have our health, as that is what is important.
I think it could well be a good year for all of us and hopefully mine will start well when we get to Brands Hatch this weekend; I can't wait.
Until next time,
