Jason Plato moved to the front in the second HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship free practice session at Silverstone as the diesel-powered SEAT Leons moved to the head of the field.
Plato had ended the opening session second behind Matt Neal but moved to the front during the second 40 minute session of the morning with a best time of 1min 00.543secs – slightly slower than Neal had managed in the earlier period of on-track action.
Plato was followed on the times by team-mate Darren Turner who was back on form after his earlier oil leak and ended the session just under two-tenths of a second of a second behind Plato on the times, with Tom Chilton slotting into third as 'best of the rest' behind the diesel duo.
Colin Turkington again edged out Mat Jackson for BMW honours with the Team RAC 320si finishing fourth, a tenth of a second up on the BMW Dealer Team UK entered machine. Defending champion Fabrizio Giovanardi ended up sixth in his ballast heavy Vectra.
Neal slotted into seventh place ahead of Gordon Shedden, with Harry Vaulkhard an impressive ninth in the Robertshaw Racing Chevrolet Lacetti and Stephen Jelley also breaking into the top ten.
Tom Onslow-Cole hit gearbox problems and could manage only four laps during the session after repairs from the Triple Eight squad, posting the twelfth quickest lap, while Alan Taylor ground to a halt in the pitlane after managing only an out lap although he then returned to the track late on to turn six laps.
