Points leader Fabrizio Giovanardi has been left with work to do on race day at Silverstone after missing out on a place in the top ten in qualifying for the latest rounds of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship.
Despite maximum ballast onboard his Vectra VXR, the Italian was a solid third fastest in the opening practice session and just a fraction of a second behind his closest challenger in the standings, Jason Plato.
In the second session however, Giovanardi could only post the sixth quickest time having gone half a second slower, and in qualifying he proved unable to even make the top ten, with the eleventh quickest time leaving him with work to do on race day.
"It will be tougher than I expected," he reflected to Crash.net
. "We need to understand why we were quick this morning but then weren't so quick this afternoon.
"On my first set of new tyres I got stuck in traffic on two laps and then on my other new tyres I got one lap without traffic. But it is tight, and I would have been sixth or seventh if I had found two-tenths of a second.
"I am in the middle of it all but I will do my best. I have to score points to recover from my qualifying. The best place to be is where Jason is..."
