Matt Neal says he is keen to end the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season with a trip to the podium after qualifying on the second row of the grid at Brands Hatch.
The VX Racing driver, fresh from his V8 Supercar Championship outing at Phillip Island last weekend, seemed to take his time to get back into the swing of things on his return to the Vectra, posting the ninth quickest time in FP1 but slipping to 14th in FP2.
However, come qualifying, the double champion found himself leading the Vauxhall challenge and his penultimate lap of the session was good enough for fourth place on the grid.
While team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi could only manage eleventh fastest in his ballast-laden Vectra, the Italian's main rival Jason Plato was only one place ahead on the timesheets and Neal said that would leave him free to go for victory.
“I'm happy with that after free practice,” he said. “We were trying a few things out and I think I still had my V8 head on; I went to get into the wrong side of the car in both practice sessions!
“Fabrizio only needs to score nine points and that's if Jason gets the win, which doesn't look likely after qualifying. I'm going to get my head down and go for the podium. A win to end the season would be nice.”
