Collard pleased with Airwaves pace

Rob Collard said he is prepared to 'wait and see what happens' after qualifying on the second row of the grid for the opening rounds of the new HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship season.

The Airwaves BMW driver set the pace during the second free practice session of the weekend at the home circuit for the Motorbase Performance-run outfit, and carried that impressive speed into qualifying as he took the fight to factory Vauxhall pair Matt Neal and Fabrizio Giovanardi.

Indeed, all three drivers were able to dip below Yvan Muller's long-standing qualifying lap record and while Collard ended up third, he was pleased to have shown that the BMW team's speed wasn't just a fluke, even if he faces a challenge to get ahead of two double champions on race day.

"It'd take a brave man to overtake Fabrizio and Matt into the first corner,” he said. “I'm not one for theories like that. You can only really call it when the lights go out and you set off so let's see what happens.

“Right now, I'm delighted for the team. We're top BMW and we've proved our times in testing last week and practice this morning were no fluke."
