Thompson: It’ll take time

James Thompson admits he is delighted to have had the chance to return to the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship following the announcement that he will join Team Dynamics from the second round of the year at Thruxton.

Thompson will replace Gordon Shedden in the Honda team's line-up as he makes his return to the series for the first time since 2006, when he contested a part campaign for SEAT alongside his WTCC commitments.

Left without a drive in the world series this year after N.Technology announced it was quitting the championship, Thompson tested for Dynamics, Tempus Sport and Motorbase over the winter and will now become the fourth champion on the grid alongside Jason Plato, Matt Neal and current title holder Fabrizio Giovanardi.

However, whilst he admits he is looking forward to going up against some of his former rivals, Thompson was quick to point out that it may take some time to get up to speed – although he also conceded that anything could happen after Plato won at Brands Hatch despite nothing more than a shakedown in his RML-run Chevrolet Lacetti.

“I think the crowds appreciate the big names and hopefully I can put on a show,” he told the official series website, BTCC.net. “I certainly want to be competitive and in there mixing it with everybody.

“There's no way, though, that I'm just going to jump in the car and win three races. I haven't raced since November last year and, even though I know the Civic has great potential having tested it during the winter, it will take time and mileage. Then again, look what Jason ended up with at Brands Hatch with only a shakedown in the car.

“Thruxton maybe makes it a bit more difficult. It's the most difficult track we come across in terms of speed. But I love a challenge and Steve (Neal) wants to win races and so do I.”
