Having taken victory at Brands Hatch, Rob Collard says he is keen to try and find a way ahead of Colin Turkington in the championship standings as the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship heads to his home circuit – Thruxton – this weekend.
Collard heads into the event just three points behind Turkington in the standings following his success in the season opener, which marked the first win for the Motorbase-run Airwaves BMW outfit.
With confidence on a high following his fine start to the year, Collard admitted he couldn't wait for his home event with the focus on battling for more podium success.
“I really cannot wait until Thruxton,” he said. “It's my home race and I'm looking forward to getting out in front of the crowds there. I feel the Airwaves BMW 320si should be strong once again, and if we could claim another couple of podium results that would be fantastic.
“For me the aim will be to try and close the gap on championship leader Matt Neal and try and get ahead of Colin Turkington in the standings. I think the Team RAC BMWs will be our biggest rivals this season, so if we can come out ahead of them after this weekend that would be a great position to be in.”
Team boss David Bartrum said he felt confident that his driver would benefit from the extra support that comes with competing on home soil, although he admitted that the aim of fighting for the podium wouldn't be easy to achieve at the quickest circuit on the calendar.
“I'm sure Rob will revel in the atmosphere as being a local driver he will get great support from the fans, especially after his outstanding win a fortnight ago,” he said. “Thruxton is a really tough circuit though and we will have to work very hard to make sure we are fighting at the front again. We want to keep setting our sights high as always and podiums are the target.”
