Plato to run for remainder of 2009

Jason Plato has confirmed that his one-off drive with RML in the opening rounds of the new HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship has now become a full-season assault with his Chevrolet Lacetti.

Plato's car will still be run by RML but will now run under the banner of Racing Silverline after further backing was found from power tool brand and from Auto Windscreens.

The announcement means that Plato will now be able to launch a full-on bit to try and secure a second BTCC crown to add to the one he secured back in 2001, with the Lacetti set to be a strong package at Thruxton this weekend after displaying impressive straight-line speed at Brands Hatch.

“I'm delighted,” he told BTCC.net. “Silverline and Auto Windscreens have been great and after everything that happened at Brands Hatch we've also caught lots of other people's imaginations and had a load more interest, even though the world is having a bad time financially.

“Thruxton is of course a very fast circuit and if it was a drag race then the Chevrolet would be looking very good, but we don't just go in a straight line – we go round and round so we have to get the car working through the corners as well. On paper, though, Thruxton should suit the Chevrolet.”

Plato's confirmation means he will be the fourth champion on the grid alongside Matt Neal, Fabrizio Giovanardi and the returning James Thompson.

Awesome stuff and fantastic Silverline has extended their relationship with JP and other backers also stepping up. Really didn't think I was going to be reading this news after reading the Autosport interview this morning. Loads of work behind the scenes I'm sure, but having JP, RML and the Chevvy running for a full season is great news.
