Neal hits the front

Matt Neal moved to the top of the pile in the second HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship free practice session at Thruxton, although the main headlines went to VX Racing team-mate Fabrizio Giovanardi and Team RAC's Stephen Jelley after the pair clashed on track.

The pair came together exiting the high-speed left-hander at Noble to bring out the red flag, with both cars suffering heavy damage in the incident ahead of qualifying later this afternoon.

“It was very unfortunate,” Jelley told BTCC.net. “Fabrizio was on an out lap and moved right going into Goodwood to give me room on the outside. But I was fully committed – the right hand side of the track is the racing line and I had nowhere to go.

“I actually jinked right onto the grass to try and miss him, but as I came back on he was still there and we hit each other.”

Giovanardi wasn't impressed by the incident which left him as the only person not to set a time during the session.

“I moved right and gave him all the track on the left to pass me,” he said, “but still…bang!”

The incident saw the session cut to 25 minutes, and it was Neal who emerged on top although his time wasn't as quick as that posted by Giovanardi to pace the first session.

Neal ended up ahead of Colin Turkington and Adam Jones, while Rob Collard, Andrew Jordan and James Thompson completed the top six.

Aside from Giovanardi and Jelley, Tom Chilton, Liam McMillan and Dan Eaves all took trips off the track while chasing a quick time.
