Mat Jackson was able to celebrate a 'mega' return to the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton, after securing victory in the final race of the weekend at the Hampshire venue.

Repeating the kind of success seen by Jason Plato at Brands Hatch, Jackson secured a late deal to join the RML team for the weekend at the wheel of a Chevrolet Lacetti, and then made the most of the reverse grid draw to mark his return to action with a victory.

Jackson had qualified in tenth place for his first BTCC outing in front-wheel drive machinery and made up two places during the first race to take eighth place. He followed that up with ninth in race two, which gave him a place on the front row of the grid for race three once the reverse grid draw took place.

At the start, he jumped ahead of polesitter Paul O'Neill and withheld pressure form both Adam Jones and then O'Neill to secure a dramatic comeback victory.

"Mega, just mega!" he said. "To come back to the BTCC with RML and do a deal just three days before and reward them with a win is phenomenal. The team has been fantastic, a really great bunch of guys, and there was no doubt that the Lacetti had the pace from the word go.

"It might have looked easy but it never is. But having sat at home and watched the first round on the television, there was no way I was going to let this victory go."

Jackson will now hope that his performance at Thruxton will allow him to put a deal together to continue his run in the Chevrolet through to the next round of the season at Donington Park next month.

"The next goal is to make it to Donington Park," he said. "Last year I finished the championship second overall and winning here at Thruxton just makes me more determined to go one better."
