Herbert joins Rockingham test

Having joined Team Dynamics for the Goodwood Festival of Speed, former F1 racer Johnny Herbert rejoined the Honda squad for the latest HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship test session at Rockingham.

Herbert, who won three times during his F1 career, took part in the afternoon session at the Northamptonshire circuit after flying in from his home in Monte Carlo.

The former Benetton driver took over the car of James Thompson for his afternoon of running and posted a quickest time of 1min 26.372secs which left him less than a second away from the quickest time posted by Thompson during the morning.

It remains to be seen whether or not Herbert will take part in any of the remaining five race meetings with the team this season, but he said he was pleased to have been able to spend time driving the car in anger.

"That was great fun and I've seen what these lads get up to during a race so who knows?” he said. “Let's see... foremost this was just to sample the car after the team asked me at Goodwood if I could do a bit of running to help with development.

"This was my first time on track in a BTCC race car, let alone a front-wheel drive race car, but I'm very impressed with its performance and also the BTCC paddock set-up as a whole."

Herbert's time left him twelfth overall on the times.

Maybe Steve Neal finally realised that Pinkneys money wasn't the be all and end all and that talent does make the car go quicker. Hopefully Johnny will get a drive as his personality would be good around the BTCC paddock.
