Turkington: It could have been very different

Colin Turkington has maintained his lead in the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship, although the Team RAC driver saw his advantage cut to 17 points during the sixth round of the season at Snetterton.

Turkington went into the event with a 25 point advantage over Matt Neal at the head of the title chase, and while he extended his lead over Neal during the three races, a double victory for Fabrizio Giovanardi enabled him to emerge from the weekend as Turkington's new closest challenger.

Having qualified second on the grid, Turkington was able to blast into the lead at the start of race one but was then tipped into a spin entering the Esses by Jason Plato as the pair diced for position. Luckily for Turkington he was able to rejoin and took the flag in fifth place.

Despite being baulked somewhat at the start of race two, Turkington was able to make up places as the race wore on to take second but having been outscored in both by Giovanardi, went into the final race keen to try and take points off the Italian.

That was achieved when he took the flag in second place, but then inherited his sixth win of the season after James Nash was excluded.

While that allowed Turkington to minimise his loss to the Italian in the final race, he admitted it could have been different had he not been able to recover from the incident in race one – in the same way that Plato was ultimately forced to retire.

"I'm really happy with my results today particularly considering I had a spin in race one and I never quite perfected the balance of my car,” he said. “But I think it's too early to call it a two-horse race between Fabrizio and myself. Sure, we've broken away slightly but it can turn around so quickly.

“Just think if I'd not recovered from that spin in race one - there could have been a very different look at the top of the championship tonight."
