James Nash has his sights set on fighting for the podium when he makes his return to the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship grid this weekend at Silverstone.
Budgetary issues forced the RML driver to miss the last round of the campaign at Knockhill, leaving the youngster unable to build on the pace he displayed in the final race of the weekend at Snetterton.
There, Nash took victory 'on the road', although he was later excluded from the results for contact with Rob Collard while dicing for the lead which saw the Airwaves BMW man crash out of the race.
Having sat out the trip to Scotland, Nash will now be back at the wheel of his Chevrolet Lacetti for his home round and said he felt that Silverstone could be the best circuit yet for the car.
“The Chevrolet looked pretty handy at Knockhill, and that was a tight and twisty track – characteristics that don't necessarily appeal to the Lacetti,” he said. “The National circuit at Silverstone is wide and benefits from two fast straights, which is where the Lacetti really excels and then it's through the complex and into Luffield corner. The car handles well under braking so this will also be key to success at the weekend. I've no doubt this could be the best circuit yet for the Lacetti.
“After just three rounds, I am of course still familiarising myself with the car and set up, but I know this track well and have enjoyed some great results in my single-seater days. That's an advantage and provided I can get some clear runs, I hope to be qualifying in the top six.
“As a competitive racing driver, inevitably I want to win. Depending on where I qualify, the plan is simply to make a good clean start and use those straights to my advantage. A lot can happen over the course of a race and as per the old adage, to win you first have to finish, so it's essential to stay out of trouble and put in the quick laps. Turkington, Giovanardi and Plato are squabbling for a championship, but for me, it's about getting out there and being competitive from the get go. I'm progressing with every round and as always, I will be giving it my all.”
