Giovanardi: I’m here for one reason

Fabrizio Giovanardi insists he has one goal and one goal only as he heads into the final round of the HiQ MSA British Touring Car Championship this weekend; to secure a third straight drivers title.

Giovanardi heads into the event on the longer GP circuit lying second in the championship standings, some 13 points behind Colin Turkington after failing to score in the final race of the weekend at Rockingham last time out.

With Turkington having been strong all season, Giovanardi faces a tough challenge if he is to lift another BTCC crown in what could well be his swansong in the series, with Vauxhall quitting the sport at the end of the year.

As well as Turkington ahead, Giovanardi will also need to be aware of the challenge of a resurgent Jason Plato behind, with the Racing Silverline man having come up on the rails after a strong second half to the season, although the 2001 champion will be rank outsider with a deficit of 28 points to Turkington in the standings.

“Both Colin Turkington and Jason Plato are my biggest rivals now,” Giovanardi admitted. “Colin is the biggest competitor in terms of points, as he has 13 points over me, and with the rear wheel drive BMW, he'll definitely have the advantage off the line. Jason has the power and performance. The Chevrolet is quick and Jason has the experience of touring cars to be a real threat.

“I still believe I can win the championship, I have to, I'm only here to win. The last race at Rockingham didn't go the way I wanted it to go and it's left us having to make up a lot of ground at Brands Hatch.”

Giovanardi added that he would take each race as it comes during the weekend, and said that practice would be vital given he hasn't raced on the GP circuit at Brands in the BTCC before.

“The strategy for the weekend will be to just take each race as it comes,” he said. “The practice sessions will be very important as I've only driven the GP circuit about 20 years ago and I'm sure many of the other drivers have more experience than me. The weather could also be a big factor, although ideally I'd like it to rain as our car works well in these conditions. I have no influence on that though, it will be whatever it will be!”
