Go Motorsport salutes Turkington

Go Motorsport has congratulated its ambassador Colin Turkington after he was crowned the 2009 HiQ MSA British Touring Car champion.

Turkington, driving a West Surrey Racing-run Team RAC BMW, clinched the title at Brands Hatch last Sunday in front of huge 35,000 trackside crowd as well as a live ITV4 audience.

Earlier this year, Turkington became an ambassador for the Motor Sports Association's Go Motorsport campaign created to encourage people to take up roles across the many disciplines in motor sport across the UK and his orange Team RAC BMW has sported Go Motorsport decals throughout the season.

"We are delighted to congratulate Colin on claiming the 2009 BTCC title. Colin's career path shows a decade of progress through the ranks of domestic motor sport and he was one of the founding members of the MSA's Race Elite scheme," said Colin Hilton, MSA chief executive.

"He has now won the biggest prize in UK motor sport and I am sure that further success will come his way in the future."

Meanwhile, Turkington's fellow Go Motorsport ambassador Jason Plato finished second in the final BTCC points table thanks to wins in all three races on Sunday - only the second time the near-impossible feat has been achieved. He now has 53 career wins in the BTCC - second only to Andy Rouse's record of 60.

The Go Motorsport campaign has attracted a sensational line-up of ambassadors since its launch last in 2008 by F1 World champion Lewis Hamilton.

Alongside Turkington and Plato, other ambassadors include current F1 points leader Jenson Button, F1 Grand Prix race-winners David Coulthard and Sir Frank Williams, 1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill, former F1 racers and Le Mans 24 Hours winners Martin Brundle and Allan McNish, plus Louise Goodman - one of the faces of ITV's coverage of the BTCC.
