Back in February, Crash.net
reported on two teams taking a different approach when it came to securing funding to race on the BTCC package in 2009.
But how did the year pan out?
With sponsorship proving hard to come by, teams and drivers alike were forced to think 'out of the box' in order to put the budget together and for one team, the season proved to be a resounding success.
Your Racing Car
went into 2009 looking to launch a challenge on the Ginetta G50 Championship, with fans signing up to help fund the teams racing programme.
As well as getting their name on the car driven by Fulvio Mussi, members who signed up for the initiative also benefitted from a range of offers from a variety of YRC partners, including merchandise discounts and cheaper tickets to watch the car in action.
The fact that YRC offered fans more for their money proved to be a huge draw and the team enjoyed a successful debut season as the G50 championship made its first foray onto the TOCA package.
While a championship challenge ultimately proved to be elusive, Mussi finished the season fourth in the championship standings and helped TCR – the outfit running the YRC entry – to secure the teams' title.
YourRacingCar.com has already announced that it will now expand for 2010 – with Mussi again racing in the G50 Championship and Ginetta Junior Champion Sarah Moore signing up to defend her crown in the new Ginetta G40.
“We were really pleased with the range of fans we attracted and how they got involved,' YRC boss Hannah James said. “Even when things didn't go to plan during the season, they were still there to cheer us on.
“Quite simply, if the fans hadn't signed up for the initiative, then we wouldn't have been out on the track this season. The support we got not only allowed us to go out and race, but it also allowed us to bring in a number of small businesses as additional sponsors during the year.
