Early on in the 2009 season, Rob Collard appeared to have a real chance of fighting for the BTCC title, and while his challenge ultimately fell away as the season wore on, the Airwaves BMW man still enjoyed a fine campaign.
Leading the Motorbase Performance-run team alongside rookie Jonathan Adam, Collard started the year in style as he took the team to its maiden BTCC victory in the season opener at Brands Hatch.
He failed to score only twice during the first half of the year and took a second victory at Donington Park, although by the mid-season break, the former Independent title winner had slipped down to fifth in the standings.
Any hopes he retained of the title were pretty much ended at Snetterton, where a huge accident in the final race saw him needing a trip to hospital. Although he was back in the car for the next round at Knockhill, a failure to score any points from the weekend saw his hopes of championship success ended.
A fine drive to second place in the final race of the weekend at Silverstone was the highlight of the second half of the season as Collard ended the year in sixth place – which marked his best ever championship finish in the BTCC and saw you vote him seventh in the driver of the year poll, just ahead of his team-mate.
