Former title winner James Thompson was a late addition to the grid for the 2009 season after being brought in by Team Dynamics to replace Gordon Shedden after the BTCC season opener at Brands Hatch.

As one of the most experienced touring car racers around, Thompson was charged with helping the team to improve its Honda Civic although a title bid was out of the question due to commitments already in place elsewhere.

A podium in the final race at Thruxton was a good start and he followed that up with a double win at Donington Park - making him the first driver of 2009 to win on more than one occasion.

Another win followed at Oulton Park with a podium finish being picked up at Croft, where Thompson was involved in one of the moves of the season while battling with Fabrizio Giovanardi for the victory.

Following the mid-season break, Thompson failed to add to his podium tally in the two rounds he contested before commitments in the V8 Supercar Championship with Team Vodafone, the WTCC with the factory LADA Sport team and the DTCC with Hartmann Honda saw him miss the final three rounds.

Had he been in the car for the full season and benefitted from a testing programme prior to the start of the campaign, Thompson would no doubt have finished higher than ninth in the standings.

That's partly shown by the fact that you have voted him sixth in the poll to find the top BTCC driver of the year.
