Crash.net’s Top 10 BTCC Drivers: Number 3
17 December 2009
Sponsorship issues meant there was no Jackson MSport team in the BTCC in 2009 and when the season started at Brands Hatch, it appeared there would be no Mat Jackson either despite his run to second in the standings in 2008.
However, a deal was struck to join RML in time for Thruxton and on his first outing at the wheel of the Chevrolet Lacetti, Jackson took victory in the final race of the weekend.
The remainder of the first half of the season wouldn't go as well and he was forced to withdraw from the Croft race weekend after suffering from food poisoning – which played its part in him crashing out of race one.
However, when the series resumed after the summer break, there was a noticeable improvement in results.
A podium at Snetterton was followed by two failure to scores but then he took a hat-trick of podium finishes in Scotland – including a victory in the final race.
Another three podiums – including two further victories – came at Silverstone as Jackson became the first driver to score a hat-trick of podiums in two successive meetings, and he added two podiums to his tally at Rockingham before his run came to an end at eight.
Failure to score in the season finale meant he lost out on fourth in the standings to Matt Neal but Jackson again showed his talents as one of the leading drivers in the BTCC scene.
As a result, you voted him third in your poll to find the driver of the year.
