AmD look for credibility from debut season

AmD target credibility as newcomers prepare to make BTCC debut during the 2010 season
AmD Technik (Essex) chief Shaun Hollamby insists that credibility is the main for the team as it prepares to embark on its debut season in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship this year.

The team sprung something of a surprise when it revealed it was to step up from the Dunlop Sportmaxx Cup for 2010 with a Volkswagen Golf – with Hollamby set to carry out the majority of racing himself.

Having taken delivery of the car from Estonia, AmD will now start work on preparing the Golf for the new season and while there is plenty to be done, Hollamby insisted he was confident that the car will be a credible performer when it hits the track.

“The car is very well made and I am very pleased with the workings of it, but the aero package on it isn't quite how I'd like to have the car looking,” he said. “We have an aero package that is being developed with a team that has been running in the UAE and their body kit looks fantastic. It gives the car a new lease of life and as well as looking good, the car has to perform well and it has a good splitter package at the front which gives you more downforce and grip with a front-wheel drive car.

“This is a huge challenge for us. The BTCC is the peak of British motorsport and very high up there internationally as well. The series has massive history and for any team or driver coming in, it is a massive challenge. That is what makes it so exciting and I'd hope that by the end of the year, we can look back and say we did a good professional job and were a credit to the series.”

Hollamby could yet share driving duties with 2009 Sportmaxx Cup winner Simon Shaw, with the plan being for Shaw to run in selected races if he can raise the budget required.

“We'd split the race seat between us but it depends what Simon can run,” Hollamby added. “I got to know him when I was racing in Sportmaxx in 2008 and then I got him involved in racing out SEAT last year when he did a very good job and won the series. I'd like to give him a chance to move up as it is very difficult for a young guy to raise the money to enter touring cars.

“We don't have the biggest budget in the world but if he can come along and get the budget to do three races, then that is what we are looking at.”
